Allison Bianco

American, b. 1979

Allison Bianco is a printmaker who uses a combination of intaglio and screen print to depict landscapes diminished by massive oceans and infinite skies. Her vibrant prints explore nostalgia and inconsistencies of memory. Panoramic views feature impending storms of layered clouds that hang low over the land, while the sea churns and vessels approach cautiously.

Recent works include the expansive Pouring on Jamestown, that pictures the eastern side of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, diminished by a massive expanse of ocean below; Winter Flounder, based on an old freeway exit ramp that, during cold months, transports the driver to an icy world with stone cliffs that resemble a mountain pass; Leave Your Troubles Behind where an oddly monumental sun casts a golden glimmer on the ocean, fireworks explode in the distance and a small fishing vessel hurries away followed by a shrouded sea creature; and Later that Day at Second Beach, that pictures Middletown, Rhode Island and features the weathered cliffs at shore’s edge below St. George School, diminished in the distance. Dramatic arched fireworks nod to Ando Hiroshige’s Fireworks over Ryogoku Bridge 1856-58.

The Sinking of Matunuck, which was included in the Locally Made exhibition at the RISD Museum (2013), is a panoramic triptych of prints which pictures the small coastal community of Matunuck in southern Rhode Island. The work is a visual accounting of the shacks, trailers, bars, and markets in Matunuck village and depicts what the area may look like when the ocean inevitably claims the land. Though the project was conceived before the storm, the actual destruction that took place when Hurricane Sandy battered the Matunuck coast looks eerily similar to the imagined landscape. In addition, two collections of screen prints titled Go Ahead and Sink and The Last Leg picture unfortunate ships being swallowed up by the ocean.  Since the fragile vessels share names with family members and friends they become linked with memories and history, creating an absurd relationship to personal nostalgia.

Allison Bianco received her MFA in Printmaking (2010) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI and her BA in Studio Art (2001) from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Bianco has recently been awarded a public art commission for New York City public school 671K in Brooklyn for a new, permanent site-specific artwork. The commission is through the New York City School Construction Authority, Public Art for Public Schools program in collaboration with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Percent for Art program for the collection of the New York City Department of Education. Recent awards include a project grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts for the completion of a large etching entitled The Providence River Cover Up (2019);  a Visual Arts Sea Grant from the University of Rhode Island (2015); and a solo exhibition at The Print Center in Philadelphia as part of their 88th International Competition (2014). Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; The New York Public Library, NY; RISD Museum, RI; Yale University Art Gallery, CT; and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, HI; among others.
