Allison Bianco

American, b. 1979

Allison Bianco’s work explores nostalgia and the ways in which it fosters a strange repositioning of memory. In her vibrant prints, impending storms foreshadow certain destruction.

Recent projects include Later that Day at Second Beach, that pictures Middletown, Rhode Island and features the weathered cliffs at shore’s edge below St. George School, diminished in the distance. Dramatic arched fireworks nod to Ando Hiroshige’s Fireworks over Ryogoku Bridge 1856-58 All but disappeared, Hiroshige’s images of Edo only live in the dreams of present day Tokyo. Bianco recognizes these dreams developing for a Rhode Island that has passed, or possibly never existed as she remembers it at all.

The Sinking of Matunuck, which was included in the Locally Made exhibition at the RISD Museum (2013), is a panoramic triptych of prints which pictures the small coastal community of Matunuck in southern Rhode Island. The work is a visual accounting of the shacks, trailers, bars, and markets in Matunuck village and depicts what the area may look like when the ocean inevitably claims the land. Though the project was conceived before the storm, the actual destruction that took place when Hurricane Sandy battered the Matunuck coast looks eerily similar to the imagined landscape. In addition, two collections of screen prints titled Go Ahead and Sink and The Last Leg picture unfortunate ships being swallowed up by the ocean.  Since the fragile vessels share names with family members and friends they become linked with memories and history, creating an absurd relationship to personal nostalgia.

Allison Bianco received her MFA in Printmaking (2010) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI and her BA in Studio Art (2001) from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA. Bianco is the recipient of a Visual Arts Sea Grant from the University of Rhode Island (2015). Bianco’s work was selected for a solo exhibition at The Print Center in Philadelphia as part of their 88th International Competition (2014). Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; The New York Public Library, NY; RISD Museum, RI; Yale University Art Gallery, CT; and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, HI; among others.
