Dan Talbot

American, b. 1974

Dan Talbot’s recent series of paintings was completed in the spring of 2013 while attending a residency in Yunnan Province in south central China. The residency is located in a small farming village called Lashihai 20 minutes outside of the city of Lijiang. The people of this region belong to an ethnic minority known as the Naxi. While in residence, Talbot and a few other artists lived on the farm of the Ho family, eating their meals with them as well as tagging along for many other family events.

The paintings were all done on site, en plein air. Most of the paintings consist of multiple vignettes arranged helter-skelter across a long sheet of paper. Each vignette is painted in a single sitting of which Talbot would do two or three in a day. The idea was to be out and about in places where the artist could have the chance of interacting with local people, rather than stuck in the studio. The end product comes across as an open-ended visual journal.

Dan Talbot holds a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design (1996) and attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine (1995). He is the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council for the Arts Fellowship Award in Painting (2012) and Merit Award in Painting (2007). Residencies include Lijiang Studio Residency, Yunnan, China (2013); Ucross Foundation, Wyoming (2009); Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (2009); and the MacDowell Colony Residency, Peterborough, NH (2008).
