Rohini Sen

Indian, b. 1987

As a citizen of a developing nation, India, Rohini Sen’s work often deals with socio-political conflict. Artistically, her aesthetic affinities are fueled by Indian folk traditions, Madhubani painting in particular. While at The Rishi Valley School, India, she had the privilege to train under the National Award winning Madhubani painter Sasikala Devi. Later, her formal training in Visual Art was instrumental in the finding of a personal visual language that helped evolve her folk painting style, transforming it to a grammar of her own.

Sen’s thesis work at RISD, The Unvisited Repository – Intuition in Teaching and Learning, was an artist book where she visually expressed ideas about education, decoding the images with her own writing and situating her beliefs within the larger realm of pedagogic theories and schools of thought.

Her work, both on paper and sculptural installations, has been shown in India and abroad. In June 2014 Rohini Sen’s solo show The Efficacy of Exquisite Pain opened at Gallery Five Forty Five, Bangalore India. In addition Sen was a prize finalist  in FID (French International Drawing) held in Belgium for contemporary drawing practice. Sen’s work was recently selected for a prestigious exhibition entitled Drawing 2014 along with 60 artists from India whose primary practice is drawing. The exhibition will be held in November 2014 at Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts and Gallery Espace, New Delhi, India. Rohini Sen currently holds a position as Adjunct Faculty at the Srishti School of Art & Design in Bangalore, India.
