Serena Perrone

American, b. 1979

Serena Perrone uses various mediums to create both large-scale prints and drawings and smaller, intimate works. Uniquely combining techniques such as woodcut printing with hand-mixed metallic inks and delicate drawings in silverpoint and goldpoint, Perrone is a master of her highly refined use of materials. The mixture of mediums is reflected in the content of the work as well. Images of real and fantastical scenes blend together to create a narrative that is similar to a surrealist painting or film. The reading of the work is neither obvious nor direct; rather every element serves a specific purpose which allows the scenes to slowly reveal their intentions and meanings to the patient viewer.

Serena Perrone completed a residency at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy (2014) and attended a second residency in Sicily. New work combines aquatint, cyanotypes and poetry in a cross-cultural and cross-generational exploration of subject matter. Perrone’s solo show entitled Reverie was exhibited at the Swarthmore College List Gallery September 5-October 27, 2013. In 2012, her work was featured in an exhibition curated by Innis Howe Shoemaker at The Philadelphia Museum of Art entitled Here and Now.  Perrone has exhibited her work in a number of prestigious group shows including The Print Center, Philadelphia, PA; The International Print Center New York;  The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; and the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI.  Past exhibitions include Voice: A National Exhibition of Work by Women in Contemporary Art, selected by Kara Walker, The Providence Art Club.

Perrone’s work is represented in the collections of The New York Public Library, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Library of Congress, Philadelphia Museum of Art, RISD Museum, Smith College Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
